It seemed like the timing for his new joint Another One would be perfect, and would continue his trend of putting out music in a quick and efficient manner. However, his last release was Salad Days, which was released on April 1, 2014, over a year ago. Each of his releases have received critical success as well as help established a dedicated and loyal fanbase. It’s a well done filler and it feels like one, but it would be a lie to say that a filler isn’t all fans needed to tide them over in the wait for his third full length. Following these, Another One comes across as a catchy bunch of new tunes to keep him on our radar as he skyrockets to strange stardom. It gave us a new approach to guitar music that was innovative, catchy and hilarious, while Salad Dayssaw Mac get real, drop the tone a bit and give us a look into his life and the weight of fame. Without the context of his previous releases the album would be a cracker, but 2 was the our introduction. He may have gingerly dipped his toes into new waters, exploring some new sounds and songwriting approaches, and the overarching love theme gives it nice continuity, but there’s little here to grab onto. It’s really rather touching, especially on songs like the tragically optimistic ‘Without Me’.Īt the end of the day, however, the reality is that Another One is essentially just another one from Mac.

Mac’s vocal performance sees him weaving humble and ever relatable romantic narratives to pleasantly unconventional, seamlessly flowing melodies. But it’s uneasy synth-pop that dominates the mix of tracks, with chorusey chord stabs and dripping brassy melodies that pull your stomach to your shoes like the first moments of an elevator’s descent. Distilling his unexpected mix of influences into a different styles across the album, his tried and true hook-laden jizz-jazz tunes are accompanied by some sunny surf-rock and karaoke stylings as well.
